Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
