The Former President's Regime of Retribution and Reward

The ex-president's voracious urge for payback has quickly transformed into a structured framework. During the past year, the president's rage and impulses have taken on the form of administrative measures in ways analogous to past repressive systems. Government personnel who do not cooperate are immediately dismissed and succeeded by loyalists. Political figures who challenge him face legal action, judicial process and sanctions. Opponents have been categorized under executive directives as “hostile to national interests”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “security threats”.

Federal Agencies Remade

All case involving targeting of political opponents and immunity for loyalists displays its own unique features. But, regardless of their individual character, they embody expressions of what has emerged as a deliberate technique. These events are anything but coincidental. Trump's removal of federal attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, alongside his installation of supporters in high-level posts, began quickly, soon developed a pattern, and has now been molded into a regime. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been transformed into partisan agencies under his explicit command to implement his directives. Wrongdoing has been rendered routine. It represents the retribution system.

Leadership is preoccupied with penalizing the chief's perceived enemies than they are with protecting our national security.

Inside the Structure

The beginnings of this framework has been exposed in the legal complaint of multiple previous top law enforcement officials filed in September in the federal court in Washington against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head a key figure for wrongful dismissal in “a initiative of retribution against the officials for what administration figures considered to be a refusal to exhibit adequate devotion”. According to the filing that one official, the former temporary head, describes a conversation in which he “openly confessed the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

He had tried to shield FBI agents from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. The director advised him that “White House figures” – perceived by the official to be the executive branch and DoJ – had directed him to dismiss all those who they determined as having been involved in a criminal investigation against the president. The filing continues: “Patel explained that he had to dismiss the individuals his leaders told him to dismiss, because his ability to retain his own role relied on the removal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the chief executive. Patel explained that there was nothing he or him could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau attempted to put the chief in detention and he remembers.’” Once the official advised Patel he was violating the FBI's own regulations, the director supposedly said “he knew that and he knew the essence of the immediate dismissals were likely improper”.

Broad Consequences

Following the director's reported admission to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for his system of punishment. Several of the bureau's senior executives were dismissed or pushed out in the initial period of the government. Roughly thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than several DoJ lawyers, including those in the New York office, resigned in dissent over what they considered as ideological pressure in abandoning the legal action against the New York City mayor, the mayor, in return for his cooperation with his ICE roundups of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of the department, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been devastated: 70% of its employees has departed. One-third of senior leaders at the department have left. The division implementing environmental law has lost 50% its supervisors.

Rewards and Sanctions

In the Adams case, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in protest against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, the president's “immigration leader,” appeared as the enforcer with him on a media outlet to state: “Unless he complies, I'll be back in New York City.”. Meanwhile, another figure, earlier the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the arrangement, was granted an court role, a possible springboard to the judicial branch.

Trump's exemption for offenses committed while in government, awarded by the unprecedented judgment of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus preventing his criminal case over the Capitol riot and preserving his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he stands to defend his supporters. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to authorize corruption. The effect of the supreme court decision permeates his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. The court matter has spread. Similar to Richard Nixon's administration lawyer the figure said about the Watergate
