Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
